In the video above you will find a step by step guide on the BMW R1200GS final drive service and maintenance. This process will be very similar for all 2005-2013 BMW R1200GS and GS Adventures. The R1200RT will also utilize the same procedure. For the newer liquid cooled bikes, the process is the same except that the swing arm is on the left side of the bike and the rear wheel does not need to be removed if you are just doing a simple fluid change.
The fluid that we used for the final drive of our 2013 BMW R1200GS Adventure was Spectro Oils 75w90 Differential Gear Oil. This oil is GL-5 rated so is completely compatible with the factory specifications of this bike. The oil can be found here. The fluid change takes 180 ML, so one bottle of fluid is enough for 4-5 fluid changes!
